Growth aided slightly if glycine, histidine, or choline is added to formate (446). Will also grow on a mixture of methionine and adenine and suboptimally on adenine alone (446). Lacks cytosolic (but not mitochondrial) serine hydroxymethyl- transferase (Fig. 17) (124, 210). Has increased formyl tetrahydrofolate synthetase, methylene tetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase, isocitrate lyase, and glyoxalate aminotransferase activities (209, 210). Use 0.3 mg of formate per ml.
