Structural gene for adenylosuccinase, which controls two reactions in adenine synthesis (393, 1158). (See Fig. 8.) Accumulates a small amount of purple pigment when adenine is limiting (682). Used for the first demonstration of complementation between alleles in vivo (393) (simultaneous with independent demonstration in am) and in vitro (1157). Enzyme in revertants (1158). Used to study purine transport (787). Strains carrying alleles 44206 and 44415 are heat sensitive (34 C versus 25 C) (482, 682) and are osmotic remediable at 30°C (636); enzyme synthesized at 30°C by heat-sensitive strains has altered properties (636).
