We are busy here at the FGSC. The Neurospora knockouts are continuing to arrive and we have begun the process of putting them into 96-well format. We are also assembling groups of strains in 96-well format, such as the "Hyphal Growth" set.
For the main set, we will prepare 1.5 ml conidial suspensions in deep 96-well plates, then later when they are all done (or at least when MANY are done) we will thaw them and aliquot them into regular 96-well plates for distribution. If anyone has a spare liquid handling robot that they want to donate to the cause.....
In other news, the registrations for the Neurospora 2006 meeting are over as are abstract submissions. If you are coming to the meeting and want to send an abstract, we can try to accommodate you if you e-mail your abstract as soon as possible. Four years ago there were 35 abstracts; two years ago there were 70 abstracts. So far this year it looks like there will be an intermediate number.
We have received Aspergillus nidulans strains deleted for the ku genes.
Happy New Year from the FGSC.
It has been a quiet week but we have been able to take care of things that are less urgent. We got a new batch of lyophil blanks from Bellco Glass. They are 15 cm X 6 mm glass tubing with one end sealed and the other flame polished. We sterilize them and use them to store freeze-dried spores. When I came to the FGSC in 1995 we made the lyophil blanks by hand, starting with 6ft glass tubing and cutting it down and sealing the ends by hand. That was a lot of work. For many years we stored the sealed lyophils in 2.4 cm round screw-cap plastic bottles but we switched a year ago to zip-lock bags and realized approximately 50% reduction in volume.
| At home, I watched
the March of the
Penguins and I was struck by how similar penguins are to dolphins.
It seemed that Penguins are the Aves solution to being a large marine
predator similarly to how Dolphins are a Mammalian solution. Penguins however, unlike Dolphins, jump out and walk around when it is time to breed. |
