Additional resources from the FGSC

Custom DNA preparation

               The FGSC can provide genomic DNA from most strains in the collection.
               Usually we send 10- 20 ug of high molecular weight DNA and ask $100 per sample
               ($200 for commercial labs).
      
               Because of our limited staff we ask that clients who have the resources and expertise to
               prepare DNA in their own lab do so.

               We also have fosmid, cosmid and BAC clones from the genome program of Neurospora crassa,
               Aspergillus nidulans,  Magnaporthe grisea, Puccinia graminis, Fusarium graminearum and
               Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. These can be sent as DNA or as living stabs.

Culture Slants
              

               Slants are available in two sizes and several media          10 for $5

               10 X 75 mm slants with approximately 1 ml of medium    
               15 X 100 mm slants with approximately 2 ml of medium    

               Commonly available media include Vogels Minimal, complete, or others.

 

Vinoflow                                                                          Not Available

               The FGSC sample of Vinoflow has been exhausted.

                Novozymes has provided the FGSC with a sample of Vinoflow FCE (Batch KM235005).
               While Vinoflow is available in the US, some scientists may not have access and others may not need 100
                grams.
               The FGSC will provide Vinoflow FCE in 5 gram samples to researchers who need it for their research.
               A protocol for using Vinoflow for protoplasting Aspergillus is available online

Vogels 50 X salt solution

                   Available both with and without nitrogen

                   250 ml (enough for ~12 L of media)                  $50, plus shipping

                   Prepared according to Vogel, 1956

Ignite (also known as Basta or phosphinothricin)                $25 shipping

               Purified from Finale herbicide according to the protocol of Hays and Selker
               Tested for the ability to inhibit wild-type Neurospora at  400 ug/ml  and
               to allow growth of a Bar containing strain (FGSC 9718)
               Supplied as a 200 mg/ml solution. 
               We are only providing this as a service for labs who do do not have the equipment or expertise
               to prepare this reagent.

Race tubes                                                                      $5 each, plus shipping

                We have no remaining inventory of Race Tubes and will attempt to re-stock them in early 2010.

                They are 40 cm in length and have an outside diameter of 16mm
                with 2cm 45° bend on both ends. They are made of Borosilicate glass.

Silica gel blanks                                                               $5 each, plus shipping

                Suitable for preparing long-term stocks of fungal strains.
                Provided as ~3.5 gm silica gel, sterilized and dried in a 13 X 100 mm screw cap tube

Pluronic prill

                Also known as "reverse agar."  A surfactant polymer useful for culturing fungi.
                Donated to the FGSC by K. Munkres. See FGN 37:26. Limited samples are available without charge.
